Construction of School Block in Nsanje Enhances Access to Education
New school block in Zibankhwe, Nsanje district, reduces travel distances for children in the area, enhancing access to education, writes Cornelius Lupenga.
NSANJE, Malawi— Children in the area of Senior Chief Mbenje in Nsanje district will no longer have to travel long distances to attend school, thanks to the construction of a new school block in Zibankhwe, writes Cornelius Lupenga.
The initiative aims to improve access to early education and alleviate the challenges faced by young students.
Village Headman Zibankhwe highlighted the difficulties children encountered due to the distance to Chirimba Primary School, the nearest educational institution. He noted that younger children, aged 6 or 7, were unable to walk such long distances on a daily basis, particularly as there were no houses along the route.
"The coming of the school in the area will address the challenge that children are facing," said Village Headman Zibankhwe, emphasizing the significance of the new school block.
The traditional leader also raised concerns about the safety of children during the rainy season when rivers flood, making it impossible for them to cross.
The construction of a local school will not only reduce the travel distance but also ensure the safety of students during adverse weather conditions.
Esther Damiyano, a 10-year-old resident, expressed her excitement about starting school closer to her village. She dreams of becoming a teacher once she completes her education.
"I want to be a teacher once I complete school," said Esther, reflecting the aspirations of many children in the area.
Parliamentarian for Nsanje Lalanje, Gladys Ganda, echoed the sentiments of Village Headman Zibankhwe, emphasizing the long-awaited development in the community.
Ganda highlighted the absence of a school in the area, despite the district's 58 years of independence. She expressed hope that the school block would be open for use during the upcoming 2023–24 academic year.
"I have focused on the education sector, and now I will be targeting the health sector as well, as the area lacks a health facility," added Ganda, emphasizing the need for additional social services in Zibankhwe.
The construction of the school block is expected to significantly improve access to education for children in Zibankhwe and provide them with a brighter future.
