Communities Unite to Mark World AIDS Day in Chikwawa
"Let communities lead," Councilor Clement Kamoto urged during Chikwawa District's World AIDS Day commemoration on Saturday.
CHIKWAWA, Malawi - Stakeholders gathered at Chikwawa community center ground on Saturday in a candle lighting ceremony, reflecting on the global impact of HIV and AIDS, writes Comfort Bulangete.
The event emphasized unity in eradicating the disease's spread in the district.
"Testing allows us to plan for the future and prevent transmission between mothers and children," said Wyson Bush, Chikwawa District Council Chairperson and guest of honour, stressing the importance of active participation in combatting HIV/AIDS.
Bush delivered a call for government and NGOs to collaborate firmly against further spread.
"I'm glad this event took place in my area to raise youth awareness," said Councilor Clement Kamoto, expressing satisfaction.
Chikwawa District AIDS Coordinating Committee Chair Martin Samuko echoed the call for testing and disseminating information on available services and prevention.
While strides have been made, Samuko urged continued stakeholder support for a better future.
District Medical Officer Dr. Wamaka Msopole reported approximately 30,000 residents receiving antiretroviral therapy.
A 2.4% default rate was attributed to natural disasters, though efforts are underway to extend services.
Msopole emphasized collective responsibility at all levels to battle HIV/AIDS, aligning with the theme.
The event included a solidarity walk, performances, testimonies, and support from various partners.
