DOWA, Malawi- Communities in Dowa joined people around the world today in commemorating World AIDS Day at Senior Chief Dzoole's headquarters in the district, writes Mphatso M'bang'ombe.
Speaking at the event, Maclein Harawa, Zoe Empowers Country Manager, said the event aimed to disseminate information and raise awareness among youth and the general public.
This year's theme is "Let Communities Lead."
"World AIDS Day reminds us that HIV has not gone away," Harawa said. "There is still a vital need to raise money, increase awareness, and fight prejudice."
The event was funded by Zoe Empowers, an organization working to empower adolescent girls and young women in Malawi.
World AIDS Day, held annually on Dec. 1, raises awareness about HIV and commemorates those who have died from AIDS-related illnesses. According to UNAIDS, an estimated 38 million people globally were living with HIV in 2019.
Harawa said this year's theme emphasizes the role communities play in responding to the HIV epidemic. She encouraged participants to get tested, know their status, and access treatment if positive.
The event included HIV testing services, counselling, educational performances, and speeches from community leaders.
Dowa District Health Office representatives also attended.
