Civil Society Group Criticizes Malawi President Over Cabinet Size
The criticism comes as Chakwera faces mounting pressure to deliver on promised reforms and improved governance.
MZUZU, Malawi— The Mzuzu Civil Society Network has criticized President Lazarus Chakwera's recent cabinet appointments, calling the expanded cabinet excessive and demanding immediate downsizing, writes Tionge Hara.
In a January 4 statement, network leaders Edward Kantuseya and Isaac Cheke Ziba urged the president to prioritize competence and proven performance over political loyalty in ministerial appointments.
"We demand that the president revisit the cabinet size and reduce the number of ministers," the statement said.
The network, representing 33 civil society organizations, also called for enhanced transparency, accountability, and improved service delivery.
Kantuseya warned of potential peaceful demonstrations and petitions if their concerns go unaddressed.
"Failure to address these issues will prompt further civic actions," he said.
Government spokesperson Moses Kunkuyu defended the appointments, suggesting the cabinet should be evaluated based on "performance and effectiveness" rather than size.
The criticism comes as Chakwera faces mounting pressure to deliver on promised reforms and improved governance.
The Mzuzu Civil Society Network's stance reflects broader public concern over government efficiency and resource allocation amid economic challenges.
