CIMPA School at Mzuzu University Encourages Mathematicians to Address Real-Life Challenges
Research mathematicians urged to tackle real-life challenges as CIMPA School at Mzuzu University concludes with messages of perseverance.
MZUZU, MALAWI — The International Centre of Pure and Applied Mathematics (CIMPA) School hosted by Mzuzu University concluded, urging mathematicians to address real-life challenges for meaningful contributions to society, writes Tionge Hara.
The two-week school involved participants from various countries.
Dr. Ellemes Phuma, Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences at Mzuzu University, presided over the closure of the CIMPA School, highlighting the importance of applying mathematics to real-life challenges.
She emphasised the university's commitment to academic excellence in all disciplines.
Under the theme "Coding Theory and its Applications," the school brought together master's and doctoral students, early career faculty, and speakers from Malawi, Zambia, South Africa, Benin, Kenya, Madagascar, and Vietnam. The International Centre of Pure and Applied Mathematics (CIMPA) and the International Mathematics Union (IMU) supported the event.
Dr. Khumbo Kumwenda of Mzuzu University and Prof. Elisa Gorla of the University of Neuchatel coordinated all scientific and administrative activities of the school.
This inaugural CIMPA School in Malawi featured lecturers from various institutions, including Mzuzu University, University of Malawi, Malawi University of Science and Technology, University of Pretoria, University of the Western Cape, Florida Atlantic University, University of Neuchatel, and the African Institute of Mathematical Sciences.
During the closing ceremony, Prof. Bernardo Rodrigues of the University of Pretoria urged participants to trust in their abilities and persevere in their pursuit of excellence.
He emphasised that their contributions would not only impact themselves but also the entire continent of Africa.
