Church NGO Aids Mzimba Students, Eyes Wider Support
Healing Hands International plans a community meeting to discuss the next phase of their project.
MZIMBA, Malawi - Healing Hands International, a church-affiliated NGO, distributed school supplies and clothes to 126 students in Engalaweni, Mzimba district on Saturday, writes Soyapi Jalanthowa.
The move aims to address poverty-related barriers to education.
"We saw many children missing school due to lack of basic necessities," said Pastor Mbwenu Chirwa, Executive Director of Healing Hands International.
"This intervention will change mindsets about education for both parents and children."
The NGO also provided support to expectant mothers.
"Engalaweni is our model area for interventions in agriculture, clean water, education, and village savings and loans," said Pastor Chirwa.
"Our goal is to uplift the lives of the people here."
Wyness Chirwa, a teacher at Engalaweni Primary School, said the support is critical due to high poverty levels.
"This will motivate our learners and improve their academic performance," she said.
Collings Jeka, a Form 4 student at Kavuula CDSS, expressed his relief.
"I used to do odd jobs to buy school supplies," he said. "I feel relieved to receive these items."
News of the distribution spread quickly, with parents expressing gratitude.
"This is a huge blessing for our families," said Thandiwe Mphande, a mother of three.
"School supplies are a constant worry, and new clothes would be wonderful too."
Local leaders echoed the appreciation.
"Education is key to a brighter future," said Village Headman Kampeni.
"Healing Hands International shows true compassion by addressing the root causes of low school attendance."
Healing Hands International plans a community meeting to discuss the next phase of their project.
They aim to collaborate with residents to identify and prioritize areas for further support, ensuring their interventions continue to effectively address the needs of the Engalaweni community.
