CHRR urges media to educate voters, prevent apathy in elections
KARONGA, Malawi- The Centre for Human Rights and Rehabilitation (CHRR) has urged journalists across the country to proactively educate citizens about their voting rights and work to prevent voter apathy ahead of the 2025 general election, writes Lusekero Mhango.
CHRR Programme Officer Maxwell Mvula made the call on Wednesday during a media engagement with Karonga-based journalists.
"We urge journalists to use their platforms to educate citizens about their rights and responsibilities as voters because the media has a duty to inform the public and ensure that every eligible voter is equipped with the knowledge they need to participate fully in the democratic process," Mvula said.
He highlighted that the media plays a crucial role in shaping public understanding and participation in the electoral process, noting a well-informed public is essential for a robust democratic process.
Mvula expressed optimism about seeing increased media coverage of electoral issues following the engagement providing journalists with updated information on electoral processes.
"The media serve as civic educators; therefore, the engagement has been crucial in reminding journalists about their responsibilities in informing the public about the electoral process," said Blessings Mtika from Mibawa Television, a participant.
Mtika challenged fellow journalists to broaden their horizons and focus more on the electoral process, recognizing that educating the public is an ongoing and continuous effort.
With support from UNDP, CHRR is implementing a one-year "Enhancing Participation of the General Public in the 2025 General Elections" project in 15 districts including Karonga, Chitipa, Salima, Zomba, Lilongwe and Blantyre.
