MZIMBA, Malawi - The Social Support for Resilience (SoSuRe) project, implemented by the CCAP Synod of Livingstonia Development Department (SOLDEV) with funding from the European Union (EU) through Christian Aid, is making a significant impact on Social Cash Transfer Beneficiaries, according to Christian Aid Country Director Luke Theu, writes Lameck Kayira.
Speaking today at Mapira Village, TA Khosolo in Mzimba District, Theu witnessed a goat pass-on activity and expressed his satisfaction with the project's interventions.
"We are happy with the impact the project has made through interventions such as climate-smart agriculture technologies, livestock pass-on, village savings and loans, natural resources management, and nutrition education," Theu said.
He also expressed gratitude for the collaboration among different stakeholders involved in the project's implementation.
Theu urged the beneficiaries to continue implementing the activities even after the project phases out in February 2024.
Agness Thawi, Vice Chairlady of Khosolo Area Development Committee (ADC), also spoke at the event and appreciated the livestock support provided by the project.
She emphasized that it would improve nutrition support and enhance manure production for improved food security in vulnerable households.
Thawi also noted that the livestock support came with capacity building in livestock management, including goat medication.
Victor Kayera, the representative of the District Animal Health and Livestock Development Officer (DAHLDO), expressed great satisfaction with Christian Aid's efforts to complement government initiatives.
He highlighted that the livestock support would fulfil government requirements for increased livestock ownership and contribute to more households having livestock.
Kayera also praised the SoSuRe project for empowering community animal health workers, who play a crucial role in the livestock sector.
Kenneth Sakala, Executive Director for SOLDEV, commended the Khosolo area for its receptiveness to community development projects.
He emphasized the need for a mindset change among beneficiaries and the wider community to achieve sustainable development at the household and community levels.
Sakala extended his gratitude to Christian Aid for entrusting SOLDEV to implement the project across all ten Traditional Authorities (TAs) in Mzimba.
The SoSuRe project, funded by the EU through Christian Aid, is a three-year initiative targeting 14,907 Social Cash Transfer Beneficiaries with a budget of €1.7 million.
