Chikwawa, Malawi-Member of Parliament for Chikwawa Nkombezi Abida Sidik Mia has commended her constituents for their active participation in a recent clean-up exercise at Ngabu Trading Centre in Chikwawa, writes Cornelius Lupenga.
Mia, who also serves as Water and Sanitation Minister, explained that the clean-up exercise was part of a nationwide initiative spearheaded by President Lazarus Chakwera.
She emphasized the significance of cleanliness in preventing diseases and encouraged its adoption within communities.
The minister further highlighted that clearing the environment helps deter the spread of germs that cause illnesses.
"This exercise is particularly timely given the ongoing cholera outbreak that has affected the Shire Valley districts of Chikwawa and Nsanje," Mia stated.
She expressed gratitude to the President for initiating this monthly clean-up day across the country.
Earlier, Senior Chief Ngabu acknowledged the clean-up campaign's role in raising awareness about disease prevention among local residents. He noted that the exercise serves as a form of civic education, instructing rural communities on how to maintain their surroundings and effectively combat the spread of diseases.
"We must clear the bushes around our homes and cover all pits to eliminate breeding grounds for mosquitoes during this rainy season," urged the senior traditional leader.
The clean-up exercise in Chikwawa demonstrates the collaborative efforts of government officials, traditional leaders, and community members to promote cleanliness and prevent the spread of diseases.
