Chiefs Slam Malawi Land Officials for Skipping Development Meeting
Council spokesperson Joel Phiri defended the postponement, saying proper protocols weren't followed.
MZIMBA, Malawi — Local chiefs criticised M'mbelwa District Council officials Wednesday for abruptly cancelling a planned meeting about controversial land sales in the district, writes Victoria Yande.
The meeting, meant to address concerns over plot sales and new land laws, was postponed after land officers claimed they lacked proper authorisation to participate.
"The meeting should have taken place today, Wednesday. We had many questions to ask them," said Group Village Headman Zungu from the MBC area, calling the cancellation a "lame excuse."
Council spokesperson Joel Phiri defended the postponement, saying proper protocols weren't followed.
"The invitation did not come through the Office of District Commissioner," he said.
The meeting has been rescheduled for next Thursday when chiefs plan to seek clarity on what they describe as dubious land transactions at the district headquarters.
"Once all procedures are followed, the Council will be available to answer the people's questions," Phiri said.
