Chiefs petition over delayed installation of T/A Mzikubola
Meanwhile, Inkosi Ya Makhosi M'mbelwa the Fifth blamed the people of Mzikubola for the approach they are taking, saying it goes against the decision made by the Chief's Council in the district.
MZIMBA, Malawi - Community chiefs from Traditional Authority Mzikubola in Mzimba have petitioned the district council over the delay in installing a new traditional leader for the area, writes Victoria Yande.
Speaking to the media on Monday, Group Village Headman Simeon Siwande, representing the concerned chiefs, revealed their desire for Masabane Jere, the firstborn of the Mzikubola family, to be installed as Chief Mzikubola in accordance with Ngoni culture.
"We have stayed over 24 years without a chief in our area, which has affected the promotion of our culture, among others," said Siwande. "Therefore, we are appealing to the government to assist us in asking Inkosi yaMakosi M'mbelwa the Fifth to call Paramount Chief Mpezeni from Zambia to install Masabane Jere since he is the firstborn son of the family."
The chiefs stated that Khetwayo, who is also vying for the throne, is from a younger family not supposed to rule the Mzikubola area.
M'mbelwa District Commissioner Rodney Simwaka vowed to deliver the letter to the relevant authorities for a response on the matter.
Meanwhile, Inkosi Ya Makhosi M'mbelwa the Fifth blamed the people of Mzikubola for the approach they are taking, saying it goes against the decision made by the Chief's Council in the district, which agreed that Khetwayo Jere is the rightful heir.
He said they are waiting for the government to install Khetwayo Jere as Traditional Authority Mzikubola.
