BLANTYRE, Malawi— The 2024 National Schools Chess League in Malawi is ready to kick off this weekend across all educational divisions, the Chess Association Of Malawi confirmed Wednesday, writes Happy Valirani.
The league, sponsored by NICO Asset Managers Limited, aims to promote chess in secondary schools nationwide. It will run from April through July.
"The anticipation is high for the 2024 NSCL, with a significant increase in participants expected as all secondary schools are invited to the selection stage, provided they register with the CHESSAM within the designated time frame," CHESSAM publicity secretary Francisco Mwangupili told AfricaBrief.
Limbe CDSS of Blantyre, the 2023 champion, has registered along with many other schools for this year's event.
CHESSAM is collaborating with the Malawi School Sports Association to ensure participation across all divisions. Thirty schools from six divisions took part last year.
"The NSCL falls among the key initiatives that CHESSAM, through the president, Mr Mpilo Mizire, set aside as pillars for the vision of making Malawi a chess playing nation and to ensure a better future for chess in Malawi, so that the younger generation adopts the game, enjoy it and get the benefits that it offers," Mwangupili said.
He emphasized chess' benefits for students, including developing critical thinking, strategizing and analysis skills.
