Charitable Foundation Donates 48 Wheelchairs to Remote Malawi Islands
The donation, part of a broader nationwide initiative, addresses critical mobility needs in these remote island communities.
LIKOMA, MALAWI— The Balaka-based Mama Amina Foundation has provided a lifeline to residents of Likoma and Chizumulu Islands, donating 48 wheelchairs valued at K12 million to support disabled individuals and the local District Hospital, writes Mercy Phiri.
The donation, part of a broader nationwide initiative, addresses critical mobility needs in these remote island communities.
Hassan Abdul Mallick, the foundation's director, explained that each wheelchair costs 250,000 Kwacha and comes from a larger donation of 300 wheelchairs intended to support disabled individuals across Malawi's 28 districts.
District Medical Officer Mathias Londo welcomed the timely support, emphasizing the urgent need for mobility aids.
"This donation comes at a critical time for the district, as some of our patients urgently need wheelchairs," Londo said during the handover ceremony.
The wheelchairs have been strategically distributed, with some allocated directly to disabled individuals on the islands and the remainder provided to the District Health Office to support patients in need.
Mallick urged recipients to handle the wheelchairs responsibly, highlighting the foundation's commitment to supporting vulnerable populations and enhancing healthcare services in underserved areas.
The initiative reflects a broader mission to improve quality of life for disabled individuals, providing not just mobility but also hope and independence to community members who have long faced challenges in accessing essential medical support.
