LILONGWE, Malawi— President Lazarus Chakwera will attend next month's Malawi sports awards to recognize standout talents from 2023, officials confirmed, writes Benjamin Nyirenda.
The gala hosted by the Malawi Council of Sports will take place Feb. 16 at the Bingu International Convention Centre in the capital.
Council chair Sunduzwayo Madise said during a news briefing that Chakwera will personally participate in the second annual ceremony that will award 45 prizes across 15 sporting codes.
A special expert committee is handling the nomination process to select winners who will receive K750,000 each, Madise detailed. Runners up get K150,000.
“The awards honour sporting personalities that performed exceptionally last year,” he said.
In football news, defending league champions Nyasa Big Bullets have released eight players including Nigerian Chinedu Okafor and Ugandan Collins Okumu.
Big Bullets won their fourth consecutive title last season but changed head coaches and are currently second in the 2023-2024 TNM Super League standings.
Winger Peter Banda has also left the club after a brief loan spell, Big Bullets announced.
The club did not extend contracts for the eight departing players because of unsatisfactory performances.
