CHAKWERA: SAUDI FUNDING SECURED FOR MANGOCHI-MAKANJIRA ROAD
Chakwera called it a “momentous day” for residents of several traditional authorities who will benefit from the new road.
RIYADH, Saudi Arabia — Malawi President Lazarus Chakwera said Saturday that approximately $20 million in funding has been secured from Saudi Arabia to construct a 100-kilometer road connecting Mangochi and Makanjira, writes Winston Mwale.
“We have secured approximately US$20 million funding from the Saudi Fund for Development for the construction of this important 100-kilometer infrastructure,” Chakwera said in Riyadh after signing the deal.
He said the road will facilitate trade, food security and access to services in Malawi's Eastern Region.
“It will increase economic activity and connect communities to major markets and public facilities in the entire Eastern Region including rural trading centres,” the president remarked.
Chakwera said the road will finally connect long underserved communities.
“It is time to connect Malindi, Lungwena, Namalaka, Lugola, Bakili-Binali Litufu, Likoloma, Mauni, Mpiripiri, Lulanga and Fort Maguire to the rest of the national road network,” he stated while in Saudi Arabia this week.
