Chakwera meets El-Sisi to discuss trade, cooperation

LUSAKA, ZAMBIA - Malawi President Lazarus Chakwera says that he had engaged in bilateral talks with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi on the sidelines of the COMESA meeting in Lusaka on Thursday, writes Winston Mwale.
The discussions between the two leaders encompassed various areas of mutual interest, including trade, investment, climate change, and social exchange.
President Chakwera stated, "I have held bilateral talks with Egyptian President, Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, in Lusaka on the sidelines of the COMESA meeting. Our discussions touched on a number of areas of mutual interest, ranging from trade, investment, climate change, and social exchange."
During the talks, President Chakwera highlighted the potential for trade collaboration between Egypt and Malawi, with a focus on leveraging their respective areas of industrial strength.
He emphasised, "Egypt and Malawi are exploring trade exchange that centres on respective areas of industrial strengths."
President El-Sisi extended heartfelt sympathies to Malawi for the severe damage caused by Cyclone Freddy earlier this year.
He expressed his government's commitment to supporting the recovery efforts in Malawi, stating, "President El-Sisi has also offered deep sympathies to Malawi for the devastation of Cyclone Freddy early this year. He has expressed his government's commitment to support our recovery efforts."
To ensure continued collaboration and cooperation, both leaders agreed to maintain engagement at all levels of government and state through the Joint Permanent Commission of Cooperation established between the two nations.
President Chakwera affirmed, "We have agreed to maintain engagement at all levels of government and state through the Joint Permanent Commission of Cooperation between the two nations."
Reflecting on the outcome of the talks, President Chakwera expressed satisfaction with the progress made during the summit and the bilateral discussions.
He emphasised the substantial headway achieved on a range of development issues, stating, "At the end of the day, we have made substantial progress on a range of development issues both at the summit and in the bilateral talks."
The discussions between President Chakwera and President El-Sisi are expected to pave the way for strengthened ties and increased cooperation between Egypt and Malawi in the future.
