Chakwera Inspects New Water Project in Karonga
The project also incorporates seven new concrete tanks with a combined storage capacity of 11.6 million liters, replacing the previous capacity of only 1.8 million liters.
KARONGA, Malawi- Malawian President Lazarus Chakwera on Monday inspected the Karonga Water Supply Project, a major development expected to significantly improve access to clean water for over 189,000 people in the district and surrounding areas, writes Winston Mwale.
"The advantage of this water project is that it extends far beyond Karonga's boundaries," President Chakwera said during the visit.
The project includes a new pipeline with a capacity of 1.3 million liters per hour, feeding into a 30 million liter treatment plant – a substantial increase from the current facility's maximum daily output of 12 million liters.
The project also incorporates seven new concrete tanks with a combined storage capacity of 11.6 million liters, replacing the previous capacity of only 1.8 million liters.
Financed by a consortium including the OPEC Fund, BADEA, the Arab Bank for Economic Development in Africa, and the Malawian government for a total of US$26.7 million, the project is expected to serve not only Karonga but also extend water supply to Nyungwe, Mzuzu, Songwe, Mpata, and Chitipa.
