CFTC Enlists Media to Spread Word on New Competition Law
The new regulations mark the first major update to Malawi's competition laws since 1998, aiming to enhance fair trade practices and consumer protection.
MZUZU, Malawi— The Competition and Fair Trading Commission (CFTC) in Mzuzu has launched a media campaign to educate the public about a landmark law change that took effect July 1, writes Tionge Hara.
The new regulations mark the first major update to Malawi's competition laws since 1998, aiming to enhance fair trade practices and consumer protection.
Brenda Bota, director of consumer affairs at CFTC, said the commission is leveraging media partnerships to ensure widespread awareness of the new rules.
"We noted there were a lot of gaps, hence the provision of this act," Bota said.
"We are certain this law will enhance our powers because of the authority it gives us."
The CFTC held a media engagement event on Aug. 12 to brief journalists on the law's key points.
Feston Malekezo, chairperson of Nyika Media Club and Times Group bureau chief in Mzuzu, praised the initiative.
"The engagement came at the right time," Malekezo said. "We've grasped the changes in the act, including important concepts like buyer power, and we'll educate the public as it's our duty to do so."
The German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ) supported the training workshop.
