Catholic Journalist Association Central Region Elects New Chair
The ACJ Central Region Chapter's election reflects the ongoing efforts to strengthen professional networks and support systems for journalists within the Catholic community.
LILONGWE, Malawi — The Association of Catholic Journalists (ACJ) - Central Region Chapter elected Western Guta of Zodiak Broadcasting Station as its new chairperson during a general meeting held at Maula Parish Radio Alinafe on June 29, 2024, writes Jonathan Mzumazi.
Guta, who replaces Sam Kalimba after his six-year tenure, expressed gratitude for the trust placed in him and his team.
"We have welcomed the development with gratitude that members of the association have seen it important to elect us," Guta said in an interview.
"As new leaders, we want to see to it that we continue from where our predecessors left and carry on with new plans to strengthen the association."
The election, chaired by Fr. Steve Likhutcha from St. Ignatius in Area 30, Lilongwe, was described as fair and peaceful. Other elected officials include:
- Andrew Viano (ZBS) - Vice Chairperson
- Brenard Mwanza (Luntha TV) - Secretary General
- Lucy Kajongwe (Mibawa TV) - Vice Secretary
- Mary Chikaonda - Treasurer (re-elected)
- Leo Kaima - Vice Treasurer
Guta, who previously held a similar position in the ACJ Eastern Region Chapter, emphasized his commitment to advancing the association's agenda.
The new leadership is set to begin its three-year term in January 2025, taking over from the outgoing team led by Kalimba.
This change in leadership comes as Catholic journalists in Malawi continue to play a significant role in shaping public discourse and promoting ethical journalism in the country.
