Catholic Diocese Donates Maize Flour to Support Vulnerable Children
The Catholic Diocese of Karonga provides 20 bags of maize flour to schools for visually impaired and deaf children, addressing food challenges.
Karonga, Malawi: The Catholic Diocese of Karonga has extended a helping hand to schools for visually impaired and deaf children by donating 20 bags of 50-kilogram maize flour, writes Wezi Mwangonde.
The donation aims to alleviate food challenges among the children in these resource centres.
Monsignor Laurent Dziko, Vicar General of the Diocese, emphasised the importance of assisting vulnerable children and orphans, conveying the message that they are loved.
He stated, "When we heard the cry of our children here, we tried to find some bags of maize and grind them into flour as one way of preaching to them that we still love them."
Geoffrey Kayange, the Headteacher of St. Mary's Boys Primary School, expressed gratitude for the timely donation.
The maize flour will support the children during their end-of-term 3 examinations, especially since Mary's Meals, which previously provided porridge flour, has stopped its services.
Additionally, Kayange highlighted the need for assistance from non-governmental organisations in constructing disability-friendly toilets at the learning difficulties resource centre, as it remains a significant challenge.
Sonboy Ikwanga, the Session Clerk of the Bwiba CCAP congregation, praised the Diocese of Karonga for its donation, emphasising unity among churches.
Karonga School for the Deaf, belonging to the CCAP Synod of Livingstonia, enrols children from various churches in Rumphi, Chitipa, Karonga, and Mzimba North.
The gesture by the Catholic Diocese of Karonga demonstrates the commitment of the church to support vulnerable children and provide essential resources to help improve their lives.
The donation of maize flour is expected to contribute to addressing the food challenges faced by these children, ensuring they receive proper nourishment as they pursue their education.
