Castel Challenge Cup Kick-off Marks Renaissance of Football Sponsorship in Malawi
The Castel Challenge Cup officially begins, aiming to develop football talent and unite the country through inclusive events.
RUMPHI, MALAWI — The 2023 edition of the K320 Million Castel Challenge Cup is set to kick off this weekend at Rumphi Stadium, writes Judgement Katika.
The tournament aims to develop football talent by unearthing players from rural areas.
As a sponsor, Castel Malawi plans to spice up the matches with music and beer tours nationwide.
"With the official fixtures at Rumphi Stadium, we are witnessing the rebirth of the partnership between beer and football in Malawi at an elevated level," said Nelson Zotto, the Commercial Director of Castel Malawi.
He emphasised the cup's goal of developing football through a bottom-up approach and elevating the sport on a national and international level.
Castel Malawi sees the Cup as an opportunity to contribute to Malawi's socio-economic development by creating job opportunities.
"We have a responsibility towards the development of Malawi, and this is one of the ways Castel will contribute," Zotto added.
The Castel Challenge Cup is expected to greatly benefit Malawi, as its format aligns with the pillars of football development worldwide.
The Cup's inclusivity is demonstrated by the key events being held across all regions of the country.
"As a brand for all, we appreciate the value of inclusivity in uniting the country," explained Zotto.
"All the regions will have key events around the cup; we made the big announcement in Blantyre, the official launch took place in Lilongwe, and this weekend Rumphi Stadium is where we take it off."
Gomezgani Zakazaka, FAM's Competition Manager, acknowledged the positive impact the Castel Cup has on Malawi football.
"Football development hinges on contributions from the corporate world. It is exciting to note that the Castel Cup is playing a great role in the cause, and we expect a significant change in our football," Zakazaka stated.
The Castel Challenge Cup aligns with the brewer's key pillars of connecting with people socially, culturally, and economically.
In the lead-up to the official kick-off, Castel teams have been conducting beer tours in the northern and central regions at selected pubs.
The Castel Challenge Cup is expected to revive football sponsorship in Malawi and provide opportunities for aspiring players from rural areas to showcase their talent.
