Cape Maclear Organizes Fitness Fiesta to Revive Tourism
Community member Harrison Gross said he was happy to help organise the event and hopes to train colleagues to plan their own events going forward.
CAPE MACLEAR, Malawi - The Cape Maclear Carnival has organized its first annual 3-day fitness fiesta aimed at bringing back tourists to Cape Maclear in Mangochi District, writes Brenda Chunga.
The event will run from November 24-26 with activities planned across 10 different venues, according to organizer Kay De Silva. She said tourism was hit hard by COVID-19 and the fiesta intends to revive the sector and boost the local economy.
"Tourists stopped visiting Cape Maclear due to the pandemic, which also affected our economy, so it's time to bring back tourists through such activities as we know the area is a tourism hub," De Silva said.
De Silva added they involved community members in organizing the event to impart knowledge and skills on event planning to spur future development.
"We have lined up different activities across all categories like sports, Gule Wankulu, pool and dancing competitions, and traditional Malawian games," she said.
Community member Harrison Gross said he was happy to help organise the event and hopes to train colleagues to plan their own events going forward.
The fiesta will feature live music performances by veteran musicians Lucius Banda, Lawi, Blasto and others.
"We aim to motivate healthy lifestyles and develop the area," De Silva said.
