MALAWI: Senior Resident Magistrate Martin Chipofya granted the bail to Abdul Karim Batatawala Tuesday morning and asked the businessman to surrender his travel documents.

The court also asked one surety to pay the government of Malawi the sum of K2.5 Million Kwacha non-cash.

Other conditions on the bail are that the accused should not interfere with state witnesses, comply with the state in any further investigations and that he should not leave Blantyre without notifying ACB.

The AntiCorruption Bureau-ACB arrested Batatawala last week in connection with alleged corrupt practices in the procurement and supply of uniforms and other

accessories at the Department of Immigration between 2009 and 2012.

Senior Resident Magistrate Chipofya also asked Batatawala to report to the ACB Fridays of every fortnight.

Meanwhile, Chipofya has adjourned the case to January 20, 2022, for the accused to take plea.
