LILONGWE, Malawi - The Malawi Boxing Association (MABA) has made an impassioned plea for corporate support as local boxers prepare to participate in the inaugural Mandela African Boxing Cup next month in Durban, South Africa, writes Alinafe Nyanda.
Speaking on Friday, MABA President Pyson Likagwa emphasized the need for financial assistance, stating that the lack of corporate backing continues to stifle the development of boxing in the country, with talented pugilists being lost to the sport.
"As we are expected to depart for Durban in South Africa next month, we call upon the country to come on board and support us as we embark on a journey that will put us on the world of sports," Likagwa said.
"We are looking for K10 million to take the boxers to South Africa."
The inaugural Mandela African Boxing Cup, organized by the International Boxing Association (IBA), the African Boxing Confederation (AFBC), and the South African Boxing Organization (SANABO), is scheduled to take place from April 15 to 21 at the International Convention Centre in Durban.
Named after the late South African leader, activist, and advocate for peace, Nelson Mandela, with the blessing of his family, the tournament has already garnered interest from over 345 boxers representing 38 nations.
The competition will feature 12 women's and 13 men's weight categories, providing a platform for Malawian boxers to showcase their skills on the continental stage.
Likagwa expressed concern about the lack of financial support, which has hindered the growth of boxing in the country, often leading to the loss of talented individuals to the sport.
