BOTSWANA CLIMATE GROUP LAUNCHES #KEEPYOURPROMISE CAMPAIGN
In a final rallying call, the climate group said all parties must take responsibility, echoing the campaign's hashtag: #KeepYourPromise.
GABORONE, Botswana — The Botswana Climate Change Network has launched a new campaign in Gaborone calling on leaders to fulfill their climate commitments ahead of the COP28 summit, writes Keneilwe Seitheko.
Dubbed #KeepYourPromise, the initiative urges youth and civil society to hold leaders accountable under the Paris Agreement, according to network spokesperson Boitumelo Marumo.
She stressed the urgency for governments to uphold their obligations before the November climate talks.
As COP28 preparations continue, the network is pushing African governments, especially Botswana, to demonstrate climate leadership locally.
It wants Botswana's Ministry of Mineral Resources to rethink fossil fuel projects and speed up renewable energy efforts.
The group advocates a comprehensive, multisectoral plan for a just energy transition in Botswana to achieve carbon neutrality and build climate resilience equitably.
Marumo expressed deep concern about the escalating climate crisis and inadequate global response.
She called for developed nations to address loss and damage impacts on developing countries.
Simultaneously, the network urges African governments like Botswana to show leadership on local climate action and clean energy growth.
In a final rallying call, the climate group said all parties must take responsibility, echoing the campaign's hashtag: #KeepYourPromise.
