Borehole in Chikwawa Nkombezi Reduces Cholera Cases
Chikwawa Nkombezi communities rejoice after new borehole provides safe water.
Chikwawa, Malawi — Communities in Chikwawa Nkombezi say they are no longer troubled to travel longer distances to fetch safe and clean water following the sinking of a borehole, writes Cornelius Lupenga.
The development has greatly assisted in addressing cholera in the area.
According to Joyce Dinala from Kulima village in the area of Senior Chief Ngabu in Chikwawa, women and girls were walking long distances to look for safe water.
She said the scarcity of clean water fueled the outbreak of waterborne disease in the area.
Dinala was quick to disclose that the parliamentarian for Chikwawa Nkombezi Constituency, Abida Sidik Mia, drilled a borehole in the village.
"We are no longer going far to access safe and clean water, and at the same time, there are issues with waterborne diseases," she said.
The lawmaker for the area, Abida Sidik Mia, said it is her wish that water is always closer to the people in the constituency.
Mia, who is also the Water and Sanitation Minister, said she will continue to sink more boreholes in the area so that people have clean and potable water at their doorstep.
"I have drilled over 50 boreholes across the constituency, and I am lobbying for more boreholes," she said.
On this, the minister has urged the communities to adhere to good hygiene practises in order for them to be healthy citizens who will effectively contribute towards the development of the constituency and the country as well.
