Border officials seize "date rape" drug shipment
The shipment from Nigeria arrived at OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg on Tuesday.
JOHANNESBURG, South Africa — South African border authorities seized more than 8 kilograms of the “date rape” drug Rohypnol concealed in dried fish, officials said Wednesday.
The shipment from Nigeria arrived at OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg on Tuesday.
Officials with the Border Management Authority conducted the bust alongside customs agents and health regulators.
"Rohypnol is commonly known as the 'date rape' drug,” said BMA Commissioner Dr. Michael Masiapato.
The prescription sedative has been illegally used to incapacitate victims targeted for sexual assault.
South African law categorizes Rohypnol as a Schedule 6 controlled substance.
Possession without proper documentation from health practitioners or pharmacists is strictly prohibited.
Masiapato commended the “dynamic operation” to intercept the smuggled pharmaceuticals.
The agencies are registering a case with the South African Police Service.
“The Border Management Authority is committed to maintaining border law enforcement with strict control measures in place to detect and prevent illegal activities,” Masiapato said.
