BLANTYRE, Malawi - In Blantyre, Malawi, the Youth Activists Initiative Organization (YAIO) is fostering open communication and informed decisions about HIV/AIDS and sexual reproductive health, tackling long-held taboos through a youth-led initiative, writes Moses Thole.
Launched in 2021, YAIO's project equips young people aged 10-25 with vital knowledge, empowering them to make informed choices and engage in open dialogue with adults.
Anne Pota, a Bangwe resident, reflects on her transformation. "Shy" discussions about HIV/AIDS became empowered talks after joining YAIO groups. Now, she guides others in her community.
Founder Tony Khanyepa outlines their multifaceted approach: group sessions, media campaigns, and youth networking platforms for broader outreach.
"Community awareness campaigns, using poems, drama, sports, and music, break down barriers and spread crucial messages," he explains.
Josen Ganizani, living with HIV, praises YAIO's impact. "Discrimination faded after witnessing YAIO's drama and sports campaigns promoting acceptance," he shares.
Ireen Chimwala, a member of the Tilitonse Youth Club, hails the project's positive influence on young people, but highlights resource limitations hindering their reach.
"Bicycles would help us support friends on ART treatment in remote areas," she pleads.
