BLANTYRE, Malawi— Bangwe All Stars secured a surprising 1-0 victory over defending champions FCB Nyasa Big Bullets in Thursday's TNM Super League match at Kamuzu Stadium, writes Happy Valirani.
Clever Chikwata scored the decisive goal in the 71st minute, capitalizing on a counter-attack to beat the Bullets' defenders and goalkeeper Richard Chimbamba.
Chikwata, who was named player of the match, sent the ball into an empty net to clinch Bangwe's first away win of the 2024 season.
Despite remaining second from bottom in the league standings, Bangwe has now collected 15 points from 20 games.
Coach Trevor Kajawa expressed confidence in his team's ability to escape relegation.
"I think the secret behind our victory is hard work," Kajawa said.
"This is the beginning of good things to come from Bangwe. We will take each game as it comes."
The loss marks Bullets' third defeat of the season, leaving them 10th in the standings with 24 points from 17 games.
They now trail league leaders Silver Strikers by 21 points, although Bullets have two games in hand.
Bullets' coach Kalisto Pasuwa acknowledged defensive lapses as a contributing factor to their poor results.
"We need to quickly correct where we are making mistakes, and we also need to have chances to score so that we can start winning matches," Pasuwa said.
