Baka City crowned champions in thrilling finale

MZIMBA, Malawi - Baka City were crowned champions of the 2023 Simso Innobuild League on Sunday in a thrilling finale that went down to the wire on the last day of the season, writes Victor Musongole.
"It was a very competitive season and we're delighted to come out on top," said Baka City manager Alick Zungu.
"The players showed great determination and team spirit to get us over the line."
Iponga FC missed the chance to finish second after squandering a 2-3 lead in the dying minutes to draw 3-3 with Ekwendeni United at Ekwendeni Community Ground.
"We were leading but fatigue set in and we conceded late on. Overall it was a good season finishing in the top four," said Iponga coach Edwin Kaonga.
His counterpart Lukas Kalinga rued a disappointing campaign for Ekwendeni United.
"We set out to win the title but it didn't work out. The season was very competitive but ultimately not a good one for us," he said.
In other games on the final day, bottom club Ekwendeni Hardknockers drew 1-1 with Embangweni United while Mzimba United were awarded a walkover after Kadona Stars failed to travel.
Baka City topped the table with 31 points, ahead of Embangweni United in second on 25 points by virtue of a superior goal difference over third-placed Iponga FC.
Despite having points docked, Kadona Stars finished fourth on 23 points while Ekwendeni United came fifth.
Mzimba United, Mayamiko Stars and Ekwendeni Hardknockers filled the remaining positions.
