Baka City Clinch North Nyasa Capital Finance Cup After Beating Iponga

MZUZU, Malawi-Baka City beat Iponga FC 1-0 to clinch the 2023 Northern Region Nyasa Capital Finance Cup in a final played at Mzuzu Stadium on Sunday, writes Victor Musongole.
Joseph Mwambungu scored the lone goal for Baka City in the 2nd minute, though Iponga protested claiming the ball didn't cross the line.
Both teams missed several chances in a competitive final witnessed by enthusiastic spectators.
Baka City's triumph makes them the first team to win both the Northern region league and Nyasa Capital Finance Cup in one season.
"We are impressed with a violence-free cup and are committed to extending our sponsorship," said Nyasa Capital Finance Director Ronald Chiwaula, noting this was their final contracted year.
Northern Region Football Association Vice General Secretary Desire Bellings said the cup was highly competitive, with a district team reaching the quarterfinals and all newcomers in the semis.
FAM 2nd Vice President Lameck Zetu Khonje said more cups are needed to develop Malawian football.
Baka City Coach Davie Muyombe said they will reinforce the squad before Super League.
Runner-up Iponga FC Coach Edwin Kaonga blamed the referee for awarding Baka City a dubious goal but was satisfied with a top 4 league finish and reaching the national stage of two cups.
Baka City received K1.6 million as champions. Iponga got K650,000 for second place, while third-placed Ekwaiweni Tafika Sports Academy and fourth-placed Mzimba United got K300,000 and K200,000 respectively.
Bwabwa United's Samuel Mbizi was Top Scorer with 5 goals, earning K150,000.
