AU mission begins construction of new police station near Mogadishu
The new station is part of ATMIS's efforts to support Somali security forces as the mission prepares to hand over security responsibilities.
MOGADISHU, Somalia — The African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) has started building a new police station in Darussalam District, on the outskirts of Mogadishu, to enhance security in the area, writes Winston Mwale.
At Monday's groundbreaking ceremony, ATMIS Police Training and Development Coordinator Samuel Asiedu Okanta reaffirmed the mission's commitment to building the capacity of the Somali Police Force (SPF).
"Policing is a shared responsibility and ATMIS Police component is here to support our SPF counterparts to bring policing to the doorsteps of community members and help protect their human rights," Okanta said.
The project, funded by the Japanese government, will include offices, an armory, cells, and support facilities like a generator and solar-powered water well.
SPF Director of Operations Brig. Gen. Mohamed Garaar said, "Once completed, the new police station will provide quality service to the community and enhance the safety and security of this area."
ATMIS is increasing the development of Quick Impact Projects for SPF to meet modern policing demands.
In August, it launched the construction of three solar-powered water projects in Baidoa, Kismayo and Jowhar to strengthen police-community partnerships.
