BLANTYRE, Malawi— Ascent Academy, representing Malawi in the 2024 CAF Women's Champions League COSAFA Cup qualifiers, secured a 2-1 victory over Young Buffaloes of Eswatini on Friday in a closely contested Group B match at Mpira Stadium, writes Happy Valirani.
First-half goals from Faith Chimzimu and Alepher Chimbeta gave Ascent the edge, while Sandiswa Ngcamphala scored a consolation goal for Young Buffaloes before halftime.
The win puts Ascent at the top of Group B standings. They face UD de Lichinga of Mozambique on Sunday before concluding group play against Botswana's Gaborone United on Tuesday.
Ascent Academy Head Coach Thom Nkolongo praised his team's performance.
"The girls played quite well considering it's their first time at this competitive level," he said.
"There were some departments which didn't play quite good, but they put up a very big fight until they scored two goals, which I can say was an excellent display for them."
