The cost of production of beers in Malawi is expected to reduce following government's announcement to reduce tax on opaque and malt beers.

This announcement, made in Parliament as Finance Minister presented the 2021/22 National Budget, attracted applause from Members of Parliament.

The Minister announced that tax on opaque beer has been reduced from 30% to 10%, while tax on malt type of beers has been reduced from 60% to 40%.

According to the Finance Minister, the cost of producing these beers is expected to also decrease, allowing producers to retain staff.

Most manufacturers in the country have either cut down on production, leading to laying off of members of staff.
