APM Slams MCP Regime, Vows Return to Power in 2025
Addressing the nation, Mutharika declared "Malawi is now a failed state" under President Lazarus Chakwera's leadership.
BLANTYRE, Malawi — Former President Peter Mutharika launched a scathing attack on the current Malawi Congress Party (MCP) administration on Friday, accusing it of plunging the country into a crisis through violence, economic mismanagement and oppression of the opposition, writes Winston Mwale.
Addressing the nation, Mutharika declared "Malawi is now a failed state" under President Lazarus Chakwera's leadership.
"We can't feed our own people. We can't print our passports. We can't print a driving license. We can't build a road," he said.
The former president, who leads the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), blamed the MCP for orchestrating violence against his party members, including recent attacks in Lilongwe where "DPP vehicles were vandalised and ransacked."
"The DPP wrote the Secretary General of the Malawi Congress Party condemning the violence. He did not respond. We went further to demand that President Chakwera condemns the political barbarism. The President opted to remain silent," Mutharika said.
"That is when we knew that the violence and anarchy we have seen is now an official policy of the MCP regime."
He accused Chakwera of attempting to "rule with violence and anarchy" after failing to govern effectively.
Mutharika vowed that the DPP, now "more united than ever," will win next year's elections and end the "oppression."
"If it is the will of Malawians that I must stand and lead the people, I will stand and we will win. You cannot stop the will of the people," he declared.
The former president also issued a warning to the ruling party: "Enough with your bloodthirsty violence...If you push the people to the limit, you cannot stop the rising of the people."
He called on Malawians to "wake up" to the return of the MCP's brutal tactics, vowing "We will never allow the brutal MCP to bring back the oppressive, abusive and blood-thirsty autocratic rule again in this country. Never!"
