Anti-Drug Group Urges Stronger Action on Youth Substance Abuse
Executive Director Nelson Zakeyu said current efforts to address drug abuse are hampered by the lack of a national drug policy.
LILONGWE, Malawi— Drug Fight Malawi is calling for increased government intervention to combat rising substance abuse among the country's youth, writes Salomy Kandidziwa.
Executive Director Nelson Zakeyu said current efforts to address drug abuse are hampered by the lack of a national drug policy.
"At the rate youths are taking drugs, it might compromise the future of the nation if no serious measures are taken," Zakeyu said.
He warned that widespread drug use could threaten Malawi's development goals, particularly the country's Vision 2063 agenda, by preventing young people from becoming productive citizens.
Despite ongoing interventions by various organizations, including Drug Fight Malawi, Zakeyu said progress remains limited without a comprehensive national strategy to address substance abuse.
"We need a policy framework to guide our efforts in fighting drug and substance abuse in the country," he said.
