Demonstrators in Salima

Malawi: An angry mob, in collaboration with a human rights organisation, demonstrated against the high cost of living in Salima.

Speaking during the demonstrations, the Director of Human Rights Defenders, Kingsley Mpaso, stated that the demonstration was staged as a means of forcing the government to address the issues that Malawians face as a result of the high cost of living.

"Our president promised to address all of the issues that the people are facing, but instead, the situation is deteriorating," Mpaso said.

He also stated that if they are unable to better stabilise the situation, he should resign.

Mpaso also urged all Malawians to band together in the fight against corruption and high living costs for the sake of a free and fair Malawi.

After receiving the petitions, Salima District Council Human Resource Officer Alexander Lumbalo assured the demonstrators that their petitions would be delivered to the appropriate office.

He also thanked the crowd for exercising their constitutional rights by staging free and fair protests.

Commenting on the same issue, Billy Banda, a Salima resident, echoed Mpaso's concerns about the high cost of living.

He also pleaded with the government to do something to make life bearable once more.
