Alumni Reward Top Students, Teachers at Dedza Secondary School
Henry Mdebwe, the chairperson of the DEGOSS Board of Governors, said the alumni's efforts would help restore the school's glory.
DEDZA, Malawi— The Dedza Government Secondary School (DEGOSS) Alumni Association rewarded top-performing students and teachers during the 2023 Malawi School Certificate of Education (MSCE) examinations, with the aim of motivating them to maintain high academic standards, writes Lewis Msasa.
During the award ceremony on Saturday, the alumni association's president, Haswell Solomon, praised the hard work of students and teachers, saying, "Without their commitment, we would not be here celebrating these results."
Solomon added, "Since we introduced the awards in 2018, results at the school have tremendously improved over the years. As alumni, we are happy, and we will continue rewarding best-performing students and teachers."
Victor Sibale, the desk officer responsible for secondary schools in Dedza Central West Division, commended the alumni for introducing the awards, saying they would motivate both teachers and students.
"Some promising students have often failed to achieve goals because of involving themselves in disruptive conduct and behavior leading to premature and sudden closures of schools," Sibale said.
"Let me appeal to all students that our teachers' hard work should be complemented by your hard work."
Henry Mdebwe, the chairperson of the DEGOSS Board of Governors, said the alumni's efforts would help restore the school's glory.
Joseph Katole, one of the awardees who scored six points, said the awards were a source of motivation for both students and teachers.
According to Thabbie Chilongo, chairperson of the Alumni Association Academic Committee, the committee spent about K10 million on cash prizes and certificates for students and teachers.
The awards ranged from K100,000 to K300,000 for students who scored between six and 12 points, while teachers whose subjects performed well received certificates and cash prizes ranging from K150,000 to K500,000.
DEGOSS, also known as "Mighty Box 48" or by its motto "Sapere Aude" (Dare to be Wise), was established on April 27, 1951, and has produced two former presidents, cabinet ministers, judges, and policymakers in various sectors of the Malawian economy.
