LILONGWE, MALAWI - After a six-year hiatus, Airtel Malawi organized a K30 million gold tournament that saw over 160 golfers gather at Lilongwe Golf Club on Saturday, despite the heatwave that has engulfed the capital city, writes Alinafe Nyanda.
Airtel Managing Director Charles Kamoto, speaking at the end of the day-long tournament, expressed the company's excitement about celebrating this milestone with an iconic golf tournament.
Kamoto stated that the hospitality offered over the weekend would be unrivaled, setting new records.
He also hinted at several other exciting initiatives that Airtel will announce in due course, aimed at allowing fans and customers to enjoy every moment of this incredible event's history.
Kamoto remarked, "To us, the best word we can say is that it was a great day. It was exceptional, as expressed by the golfers who had been looking forward to this tournament. That's why we had a very good turnout of 160 golfers; we have never achieved this target before. Despite the heatwave, everyone endured it. It was pleasing to see that everybody was happy."
Chaona Kumbani was crowned champion in the ladies' category, while Kondwani Kachika secured victory in the men's category in front of a large crowd on a glorious day.
Kachika, an experienced golfer, shared his elation about the win, saying, "I have been with Airtel; it's a network that has been with us since we were young. I have maintained my Airtel number from way back, so to win one of their major trophies is a great feeling."
Kumbani also expressed her excitement at the win, emphasizing that it was a special and unique moment for her.
"It was very tough, especially with the heatwave, but I still managed to get a net score of 68. It was really competitive, but luckily, I won," she said.
During the tournament, Airtel donated MK1 million to Lilongwe Golf Club as an appreciation for the sports facility's efforts in keeping the golf course in perfect shape.
The two golfers are now leaving the tournament with valuable experience and a close look at what it takes to compete with the country's best, both on and off the course.
