Airtel CEO Pledges Support for Malawi's Digitalization Agenda
President Chakwera hailed Airtel for the investments that it has been making in Malawi
Lilongwe, Malawi- Olusegun Ogunsanya, CEO of Airtel Africa Group, pledged on Thursday to support Malawi's digitalization agenda as a development blueprint in MW2063 by achieving the benchmark of not less than 20% internet access by 2030, writes Esther Banda.
Ogunsanya made the pledge after meeting with President Lazarus Chakwera at Kamuzu Palace in Lilongwe.
"We are fully invested in this country, so I just made a promise to His Excellency President Chakwera that we believe in his digital agenda, MW2063, and because of that, we will support him and this country," Ogunsanya said.
He went on to say that Airtel spends a minimum of $20–$25 million in investments in Malawi every year and pledged to find better ways of investing as the country is facing challenges with foreign exchange (forex).
"Of course, there is a challenge with the availability of forex in Malawi just like in other African countries due to devaluation and the unavailability of the dollar, but we are a long-time player, we have been here for a long time, and we will continue to plan for investment, and hopefully we are going to find ways of finding forex to pay for investments," Ogunsanya explained.
President Chakwera hailed Airtel for the investments that it has been making in Malawi and also stated that the support that Airtel has pledged to this country will help Malawi achieve its digitalization agenda very soon.
