He will be succeeded by Sunil Taldar, who joined the telecommunications company in October as director of transformation.
LAGOS, Nigeria - Airtel Africa plc announced on Tuesday the retirement of Chief Executive Officer Segun Ogunsanya, effective July 1, 2024, writes Moses Nyirenda.
He will be succeeded by Sunil Taldar, who joined the telecommunications company in October as director of transformation.
"It has been a privilege to spend over 12 years of my career at Airtel Africa," Ogunsanya said.
The company said in a statement that Taldar will begin transitioning into the CEO role now, working alongside Ogunsanya.
Following a transition period, Taldar will be appointed to the board as an executive director and assume the CEO position when Ogunsanya retires.
Airtel Africa Chairman Sunil Bharti Mittal praised Ogunsanya's "commitment and significant contribution" in leading the company's largest market, Nigeria, for nine years before becoming group CEO in 2021.
"On behalf of the board, I would like to thank Segun Ogunsanya for his commitment and significant contribution to Airtel Africa," Mittal said.
Taldar joined Airtel Africa in October after spending over two decades working across industries including automobiles, technology and management consulting.
Airtel Africa is a leading provider of telecommunications and mobile money services in 14 countries across Africa, with over 130 million customers.
Ogunsanya oversaw the company's successful initial public offering on the London Stock Exchange in 2019.
The leadership transition comes as Airtel Africa continues expanding its data and mobile money services across the continent.
Ogunsanya said now is "the right time" to hand over leadership.
