Aid Groups Repurpose Funds for Karonga Flood Relief
As Karonga pushes through recovery, collaborative efforts led by NCA/DCA, local authorities and community leaders stand as pillars of support.
KARONGA, Malawi - In the aftermath of devastating floods that hit Karonga District, a clever solution has emerged to aid those in need, writes Francis Botha.
Norwegian Church Aid and DanChurchAid (NCA/DCA), in partnership with SPRODETA and the Karonga District Council, swiftly assessed the damage and rushed to provide essential supplies to affected households.
NCA/DCA repurposed funds from selling obsolete office equipment to generate finances for ongoing relief efforts. "NCA/DCA used part of the sale of unused office items in the Malawi office for emergency relief in Karonga," said Stefan Jansen, country director.
"It is NCA/DCA's mission as a true non-profit NGO to use any income for the greater good of Malawians."
Crucial items like blankets and buckets were distributed to 161 households early this week, offering immediate relief to areas such as Mweneyumba, Mwahimba, Mwandanga and Kafikisira.
However, District Commissioner Frank Mkandawire urged continued support as many households still await non-food aid.
On Monday, President Lazarus Chakwera visited affected communities, pledging to tackle future flooding risks by constructing preventative measures along the North Rukulu River.
