Aford suspends secretary general, director over 'double standards'
The party has not indicated if or when disciplinary hearings will be held for the suspended officials to answer the allegations against them.
LILONGWE, Malawi— The Alliance for Democracy (Aford) has with immediate effect suspended its secretary general Wakuda Elias Kamanga and director of events Judith Mang'anda over allegations of "double standards", writes Gift Kaimira.
In a press release signed by national publicity secretary Annie Amatullah Maluwa, the two officials are accused of "sharing some sensitive information to other political parties including that of electoral alliances when the party has not made any decision on the same."
Maluwa said their actions were "deamining the trust" put in them by holding key positions in Aford.
"The two have been sharing some sensitive information to other political parties including that of electoral alliances when the party has not made any decision on the same," Maluwa stated in the release.
The suspensions come ahead of the 2025 tripartite elections, amidst discussions around potential electoral alliances among opposition parties to challenge the governing Tonse Alliance.
Aford is one of the oldest political parties in Malawi, having been formed in 1992 after the country transitioned to multiparty democracy.
It has participated in all general elections since 1994.
The party has not indicated if or when disciplinary hearings will be held for the suspended officials to answer the allegations against them.
Aford is expected to hold a convention later this year to elect new leaders.
