AEJ, Partners Train Journalists on Investigative Techniques and Evidence Gathering
FAJIM cohort receives training on investigative journalism techniques and evidence gathering during media orientation in Salima.
SALIMA, MALAWI — The Media Orientation of Cohort three of the Forestry and Accountability Journalism in Malawi( FAJIM) programme took place in Salima on August 2, 2023, aiming to empower the journalists with the skills needed for investigative reporting, writes Tionge Hara.
The workshop provided practical training on investigative journalism techniques and emphasised the importance of evidence gathering and standards of admissibility.
The sessions were led by experienced journalists and experts from AEJ, Modern Cooking for Healthy Forests (MCHF), the Department of Forestry, the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB), and the police, ensuring a comprehensive understanding of investigative reporting.
"We are grateful to all the participants for their commitment and enthusiasm, and we look forward to seeing the fruits of their labour in the years to come," said Eliam Kamanga, Executive Director of MCHF, highlighting the significance of the event.
The workshop also included presentations on understanding public relations in the security sector, with a particular focus on the Malawi Police Service.
This segment aimed to enhance journalists' knowledge and comprehension of the relationship between the media and law enforcement agencies, providing them with a well-rounded perspective for their investigative reporting.
With both print and broadcast journalists participating in the workshop, the Media Orientation of Cohort 3 of the FAJIM programme fostered an environment of collaboration and information exchange.
The interactive sessions provided participants with the opportunity to ask questions and share their experiences, further enriching their understanding of investigative journalism.
The significance of this orientation lies in its ability to equip journalists with the necessary tools and skills to produce high-quality investigative journalism.
By holding the powerful accountable, Malawian journalists will be able to make a tangible difference in the lives of their fellow citizens.
