Advocates Seek Abortion Law Review Amid Unsafe Cases Surge

BLANTYRE, Malawi — Nyale Institute, an organization advocating for sexual and reproductive justice and legal abortion, has called on authorities to ensure everyone can enjoy a safe sexual life, whether or not it leads to reproduction, writes Mayamiko Phiri.
Nyale institute director Dr. Godfrey Kangaude made the call after revelations that 849 young women and girls were treated at a post-abortal clinic in Blantyre this year, according to Ellida Bvutula, safe motherhood coordinator for the Blantyre District Health Office.
"We are not interested in abortion but unseen issues behind any abortion," Kangaude said.
Kangaude observed that women with financial means can access professional services while poor young girls resort to unsafe, sometimes fatal, methods.
He said Nyale will soon engage with authorities, stakeholders and communities on the issue.
The organization also supports a court case questioning whether a girl can access legal abortion if she is raped.
"Very shortly, we will engage with the relevant authority, other stakeholders and the grass root regarding the same," Kangaude said.
