Advocates Convene to Address Free Expression
As the 2025 Malawi general elections draw closer, strengthening networks within free media and civil society to address the expected surge in violations becomes crucial.
LILONGWE, Malawi— The Campaign for Free Expression (CFE), in collaboration with Youth and Society (YAS) and the Centre for Human Rights and Rehabilitation (CHRR), will host a consultative meeting today with journalists and civil society organizations (CSOs) to discuss Strategic Litigation Against Public Participation (SLAPP) suits and freedom of expression issues, writes Winston Mwale.
The convening in Malawi’s capital aims to engage journalists and CSOs in discussions regarding SLAPP suits — legal action aimed at silencing journalists and critics — and freedom of expression issues that challenge their work in the country.
As the 2025 Malawi general elections draw closer, strengthening networks within free media and civil society to address the expected surge in violations becomes crucial.
Access to information, freedom of assembly and expression are key for an effective democracy that allows informed public participation, where a free media and robust civil society are necessary.
Charles Mhone, managing partner at Maxson Arnold and Associates, will introduce SLAPP suits, providing an overview of what they are, their impact and ways to address them.
Journalists Peter Jegwa and Martines Naminga will join Mallick Mnela, journalism innovator and director of iHubOnline, in dialogues exploring the personal and professional impact of SLAPP suits.
A CSO-led discussion will follow, exploring the state of free expression in Malawi — the realities, opportunities and challenges they face.
Anton Harber, executive director of CFE, will close by leading a discussion on collaborative advocacy, research and legal strategies.
