ActionAid Malawi's ED Calls for Debt Relief and Increased Climate Financing

Malawi - In a recent high-level policy dialogue organized by the African Development Bank Group (AFDB), Pamela Kuwali, the Executive Director of ActionAid Malawi, delivered a compelling address, advocating for transformative measures to address climate change and promote green growth in Malawi, writes Winston Mwale.
During the event, which took place on Thursday, Kuwali, representing ActionAid, emphasized key points from the organization's "Fund our Future" Campaign.
Her presentation centred on urgent actions required to mobilize private sector financing for climate and green growth in Malawi.
Unconditional Debt Cancellation: Kuwali underscored the pressing need for unconditional debt cancellation, particularly for countries in the global south, such as Malawi. She argued that debt relief would empower these nations to effectively fund their climate transitions, enabling them to make rational decisions in the fight against climate change.
Rapid Increase in Climate Finance Grants: Recognizing the substantial disparity between the financial requirements for climate initiatives and the available funding, Kuwali urged a significant boost in climate finance grants. She called upon developed countries, the largest contributors, to redirect their investments from fossil fuels and industrial agriculture toward sustainable solutions to address climate change.
Strong Governance and Enforcement: Kuwali stressed the critical role of robust governance, legal reforms, and stringent enforcement against harmful investments in fossil fuels and industrial agriculture. These sectors, major contributors to climate damage, need to be redirected towards sustainable alternatives.
Promoting Tax Justice: To enhance self-reliance and promote socioeconomic development, Kuwali emphasized the importance of tax justice. She called for multinational corporations and affluent investors to pay their fair share of taxes to least developed countries. This financial support could empower these nations to drive their social and economic progress.
ActionAid Malawi continues to advocate for policies and actions that prioritize climate resilience and green growth, ensuring a sustainable and prosperous future for Malawi.
