ActionAid empowers young feminists to tackle economic, health challenges
Dr. Chikondi Mpokosa, General Assembly Member for ActionAid, commended the young women's efforts.
LILONGWE, Malawi— ActionAid is engaging with young feminists from various districts in Lilongwe to address the negative impact of policies on women's economic and health issues, particularly the high cost of sanitary products due to taxation, writes Martha Nakhate.
Joana Chigamba, a feminist hubster, praised ActionAid's initiative to educate and empower women in microfinance.
"This move has also clarified who a feminist is," Chigamba said.
"A feminist is anyone fighting for equal rights, not the controversial figure some people perceive."
The program has taught participants to sew reusable pads for personal use and distribution.
"These reusable pads are safe, easy to make, and very affordable, unlike disposable ones," Chigamba added.
Dr. Chikondi Mpokosa, General Assembly Member for ActionAid, commended the young women's efforts.
"When women stand to address these issues, it will help the government present local concerns to the IMF or World Bank," Mpokosa said, emphasizing ActionAid's core value of advocating for people's concerns in decision-making processes.
Mpokosa pledged full support for the hubs through political and feminism schools, along with necessary resources.
