ACORA forms resource mobilization committee to support operations, AGM
LILONGWE, Malawi— The Association of Community Radios (ACORA) has established a resource mobilisation committee with the aim of raising funds to support its operations, including the upcoming first annual general meeting, writes Winston Mwale.
The committee is chaired by Jones Banda, the station manager for Kasungu FM. Other members include Sakina Majawa Kaima, station manager for Chanco FM in Zomba; Innocent Nazombe, station manager for Tumtufwe FM in Karonga; Antony Gondwe, station manager for Maziko FM in Lilongwe; Jean Chilombo, station manager for Chisomo Radio in Salima; and Patrick Mphaka, an independent individual interested in community radios.
ACORA is a membership-based institution established by community radio stations and journalists working in the sector.
Its core mandate is to promote and defend the interests of community radio stations and their workers in Malawi.
Registered as a non-governmental organisation in 2020, ACORA operates under the Trustees Incorporation Act (Cap 5.03) of the Government of Malawi.
The resource mobilisation committee will focus on raising funds from a variety of sources, including government grants, corporate sponsorships, and individual donations.
The funds raised will be used to support ACORA's operations, including the production of programming, the provision of training, and the development of new technologies, according to a statement.
The committee is also responsible for organising the association's first annual general meeting, which will be held in Lilongwe in November 2023.
The meeting will provide an opportunity for ACORA members to discuss the association's progress and plan for the future.
The establishment of the resource mobilisation committee is a positive development for ACORA and its member radios.
The committee will play a vital role in ensuring that the association has the resources it needs to operate effectively and achieve its mission.
The committee's work is also important for the development of community radios in Malawi.
By raising funds and providing support, the committee will help to ensure that community radios can continue to play an important role in providing information and education to communities across the country.
