Access to Information Strengthens Democracy, Says MEC Chair
Kachale urged active engagement during the briefing to deepen understanding, seek clarifications, and identify ways to enhance compliance efforts within MEC.
MZUZU, Malawi— Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) Charperson, Justice Dr. Chifundo Kachale, has underscored the importance of access to information in promoting transparency and accountability, writes Winston Mwale.
Addressing commissioners, management, and staff during an orientation on the Access to Information (ATI) Law and Regulations on Thursday, Kachale emphasized that understanding obligations under the ATI Act was crucial for effective implementation in the commission's work.
"Access to information is a fundamental right that empowers citizens, promotes transparency, and enhances accountability in governance," Kachale said.
"As public servants, it is imperative that we understand our obligations under the Access to Information Act and regulations."
The ATI Law provides a legal framework for citizens to request and obtain information held by public bodies, a cornerstone of democracy enabling meaningful participation in decision-making.
Kachale urged active engagement during the briefing to deepen understanding, seek clarifications, and identify ways to enhance compliance efforts within MEC.
"By upholding the principles of transparency, openness and accountability, we can foster public trust and confidence in this institution," he said.
Reiterating MEC's commitment to information provision, Kachale cited the commission's awards recognizing its openness, including the Golden Key from the Media Institute of Southern Africa as the most open public institution, four times since 2014.
"We are guided by the principles of transparency which means we have nothing to hide except a voter's choice on the ballot," Kachale stated.
